With any crisis, there always comes accusations, recriminations, and second guessing on what should have or should not have been done. Obviously, the Trump loathing media has just become annoying noise with their incessant snarky sniping about everything the President utters. However, when the welfare of the nation and the people are severely threatened whether by pandemic or shut down programs, there should certainly be ample healthy debate as we make important decisions that impact the lives and livelihoods of Americans.
When the Chinese corona virus pandemic eventually grabbed the nation’s attention just a couple months ago, there was a lot we didn’t know. We knew it was quite contagious and it aggressively attacked the respiratory system, but we didn’t know exactly what it was or how it came to be. We know much more now; we can seemingly contain it with mitigation measures and generally treat it. It’s certainly nasty, but as more are tested we are learning the lethality is much lower and perhaps only slightly more deadly than the flu.
Many Americans are chaffing and suffering economically under the draconian shut down directives. Some are questioning all the social distancing and stay-at-home orders, but pretty much all our leaders did the best they could with the information they had. We can question their actions, but there is really no way to know where we would be had we taken a different path. What is done is done. We have substantially flattened the curve and averted overwhelming our healthcare systems, so we should be looking forward.
So why does the mention of reopening our economy evoke howls from the media and Democrats that it would recklessly endanger the public? And worse, if you advocate immediate easing of restrictions, you are maligned as a greedy ruthless monster who prizes money more than human life. The pandemic is arguably under control and while still a distinct threat, it’s proving much less deadly than initially suspected. So why the fierce resistance?
The first obvious reason is our robust economy is President Trump’s strength with the people, so if the economy is gravely damaged, most Democrats believe they can exploit that to defeat Trump. So Democrats are quite content to prolong the shut-down through November.
However, there is much more to the leftist zeal demanding the nation remain shut down indefinitely; they suddenly find themselves in socialist nirvana. A majority of Americans are abruptly at home waiting on government checks; this is Bernie Sanders’ fantasy. Businesses and industries have halted or slowed such that the demand for fossil fuels has plummeted and therefore the environment is cleaner; Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D, NY) could never have achieved that. The government is dictating what citizens cannot do not just in public, but in some cases in their homes. Government has usurped our rights and people afraid of the pandemic have acquiesced. The Democrat dream of near total control has been realized by accident, so they will not relinquish that power without a fight.
Former Obama Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel infamously quipped “You never want a serious crisis go to waste.” Democrats are giddy at the prospect of fundamentally transforming America. Congressman James Clyburn (D, SC) admitted as much when he said we have “An opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision.”
While Democrats find this crisis delicious at the moment and their threat to implement socialism is quite serious, the near national shut-down is also exposing socialism cannot be sustained. Only Democrats could bizarrely believe we can still have goods and services with most Americans at home; sooner or later shortages will ensue. Democrats sadly joined by too many Republicans also imagine the government well has no bottom, so they will gladly keep printing money until the dollar collapses. Expecting Americans will be perpetually satisfied on the government dole, they also fail to account for the public backlash as Americans lose their jobs, homes, and retirements.
Fortunately, Americans are not fooled. We know nothing is free and to maintain our freedom, we must earn our own way. We intrinsically reject dependency and innately know we can only obtain a better life for our families through our independence. Americans are already clamoring to go back to work, so we will confidently and rapidly recover. The only question is how much more pain will Democrats aided by the media inflict before we restore normalcy.
“What sorrow awaits the unjust judges and those who issue unfair laws. They deprive the poor of justice and deny the rights of the needy among my people.” Isaiah 10:1-2
