BamaNewsNow had a chance to sit down with Kiani Gardner, who is the Democratic candidate for Alabama House of Representatives District 1, to conduct an in-depth interview for her race and the Democratic runoff against James Averhart. Kiani Gardner is a biology professor at the community college level, a mother, and a wife who chose to throw her hat into the ring for the District 1 seat being vacated by Representative Bradley Byrne.
We talked about issues ranging from health care and infrastructure, to stuff like the environment and trade. We didn’t shy away from the tough topics like the trade embargo with Cuba or the impact of sewage overflow spills in the Mobile Bay Watershed.
Gardner was the top vote getter in the Democratic primary in the Alabama House District 1. If she wins the runoff, she will face off against either Republican Mobile County commissioner Jerry Carl or former Mobile State Senator Bill Hightower in the November General election.
The runoff is scheduled right now for March 31st. However, those plans could change due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak response by local, state, and federal officials.
