It’s time to make good on those New Year’s resolutions to shape up in 2020. To help everyone reach their fitness goals, Mayor Tommy Battle and the Healthy Huntsville team partners officially kicked off Scale Back Alabama today at the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.
Scale Back Alabama is a free program that encourages teams of two to lose weight (a goal of 10 pounds each) from the end of January to the beginning of April. The teams must register to participate, as well as weigh-in and weigh-out at the same location. Since the first challenge in 2007, Alabamians have lost more than one million pounds. To register your team, visit scalebackalabama.com or download their free app.
“With the momentum of the ‘Maintain Don’t Gain’ holiday challenge, which had almost 1,500 city-wide participants this year, we are excited to continue our Healthy Huntsville effort with Scale Back Alabama,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “City employees are encouraged to weigh-in through Human Resources and many of the City’s recreation centers offer public weighing locations for easy access and participation.”
Julia Michaux, Director of Human Resources at HudsonAlpha, emphasized the importance of company culture when it comes to empowering healthy choices. “HudsonAlpha is always thinking of ways to bring our campus together and Scale Back Alabama is a great way of doing so,” said Michaux. “It encourages teamwork while promoting a healthy lifestyle and improving quality of life. We’re excited to kick off Scale Back Alabama at the Institute and look forward to getting healthier in 2020.”
Joining Mayor Battle and Julia Michaux at the news conference today were more representatives from the founding members of Healthy Huntsville: Huntsville Hospital, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, Madison County Department of Public Health and Huntsville City Schools.

Scale Back Alabama
Scale Back Alabama (SBA) is a free statewide weight-loss campaign designed to encourage Alabamians to get healthy and to have fun while doing it. Scale Back Alabama is designed to address the state’s challenge with obesity; however, we caution individuals to check with their health care provider before beginning a new exercise or diet regimen.
Led by Mayor Tommy Battle and the City’s Parks & Recreation Department, Healthy Huntsville is sponsored by the following non-profit organizations: City of Huntsville, Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville City Schools, HudsonAlpha, and the Huntsville-Madison County Health Department. These organizations are working with the community to offer FREE programs throughout the year to help educate our citizens on wellness and good physical health. Our goal is to: “Reduce obesity by promoting healthy eating and active lifestyles.”
