United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer today announced that Dr. Julie Callahan will serve as the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Agricultural Affairs and Commodity Policy. Dr. Callahan had been serving in this role in an acting capacity since the retirement of Sharon Bomer Lauritsen in April.
“Her extensive knowledge and experience make Dr. Callahan a perfect fit for this key position. As the Trump Administration continues to fight for better access to foreign markets for our farmers and ranchers, her leadership is essential,” said Ambassador Lighthizer.
Dr. Callahan previously served as a Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative and Senior Director in the USTR Agricultural Affairs Office, focusing on agriculture trade issues within international organizations, as well as with the European Union, the United Kingdom, Turkey and Eastern Europe.
Prior to joining USTR, Dr.. Callahan held senior positions in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and held positions in the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service, and the American Chemical Society.
Dr. Callahan earned her doctoral degree in Marine Chemistry from the University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor of Science in Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science from MIT.
