Congressman Bradley Byrne (R-AL) issued the following statement regarding the coronavirus outbreak and its link to border security.
Congressman Byrne said: “I applaud the Trump Administration’s efforts to restrict entry of individuals recently traveling from China into the United States. However, our security against a possible global pandemic is only as strong as our control of entry into this country. The current ability of foreign nationals to easily bypass ports of entry into the United States via the Southern Border is particularly concerning, especially if the virus spreads into South or Central America where a run on the border is almost assured. For this reason, any meaningful legislation combating the coronavirus should include the resources we need to finally secure our border. The health and safety of the American people must come before partisanship.”
In FY2019, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) encountered almost 900,000 individuals at the Southern Border. In FY2020, Southwest Border Total Apprehensions have totaled 130,976 individuals, including 1,114 Chinese nationals.
