Alabama State Bar Hosts Virtual Board of Bar Commissioners Meeting

The Board of Bar Commissioners (Board) of the Alabama State Bar met on Friday, May 1, 2020. The Alabama State Bar building was open and available for in-person meeting participants. Board members participated via videoconference, in accordance with the Proclamation of Governor Ivey on March 18, 2020, which provides for Board meetings to be conducted via electronic means in order to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and to provide for essential minimal functions of the agency.

The following items were discussed by the Board:

  1. Women’s Suffrage Activities
  2. Diversity & Inclusion Committee Report
  3. Legislative and Judicial Update
  4. Judges Task Force Report
  5. Legal Food Frenzy Kickoff Announcement
  6. Database Modernization and IT Upgrade Update
  7. Lawyer Specialization Update/Legal Specialization Board Appointments
  8. Rule Seven Series Update
  9. Appointment Requests for Disciplinary Panel Boards, Disciplinary Hearing Officers, Client Security Fund Committee, and Alabama Law Foundation Board

The Board took action on the following items, all of which are considered to be in furtherance of essential minimal functions of the Alabama State Bar:

  1. Election of At-Large Board Members
  2. Approval of Award Recipients
  3. Approval of Financial Reports
  4. Submission of Proposed Changes to the Alabama Rules of Professional Conduct for Membership Comment
  5. Approval of Member Benefits
  6. Elections of Delegates to the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates
  7. Increase of Pro Hac Vice Fees
