Alabama A&M’s Harper Named SWAC Women’s Basketball Impact Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Senior guard Deshawna Harper (Indianapolis, Ind.) has capitalized on an impressive two game stretch from this past week as she has been named Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Women’s Basketball Impact Player of the Week as announced by the league on Tuesday, November 24.

An award in its second season, it recognizes the accomplishments of a player that made a noticeable difference in their team’s games during the week.

Harper was most definitely a difference maker for Alabama A&M this past week, hardly leaving the floor as she averaged 34.5 minutes while registering marks of 16.5 points and 7.0 rebounds from the backcourt.

Opening the week at a strong Belmont (11/18) team, she finished with 12 points, three rebounds and a steal before delivering an impressive performance against Georgia State (11/22).

In that one she dropped 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, including four threes, while hauling in eight boards and adding an assist for good measure. Her clutch threes helped keep the Bulldogs in a game they would drop narrowly, 62-61, in the final seconds.

It marks the just the second time a Bulldogs player has won the award with senior forward Dariauna Lewis (Omaha, Neb.) doing the honors last March 2.

Harper and the Bulldogs return to action Saturday, November 27 when they travel to Murray State. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. in Murray, Kentucky.
