Six Samford Players Earn Postseason Football Honors From SoCon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Six Samford football players earned postseason SoCon honors when the league released its coaches and media All-SoCon teams Tuesday afternoon.

Quarterback Liam Welch was named first team All-SoCon by both the coaches and media, while Montrell Washington earned first team honors as both a wide receiver and return specialist on both teams. Offensive lineman Gavin Orr and defensive lineman Seth Simmer were named second team in both polls, while tight end Michael Vice earned second team honors from the media. The coaches also released an All-Freshman team and offensive lineman Jabari Brooks was named to that squad.

This season, Welch ranked fifth in the nation in total offense per game, averaging 352.4 total yards per contest. He also ranked seventh nationally in passing yards per game, with an average of 306.0 yards per game through the air. For the season, Welch completed 315-of-477 passes for 3,366 yards and 22 touchdowns. He passed for at least 300 yards in six games this season, including a Samford and Southern Conference record 582 yards against ETSU.

Washington led the nation this season in all-purpose yards per game, with an average of 176.2 all-purpose yards per game. He also led the Southern Conference in scoring at 9.8 points per game and in punt return average at 17.4 yards per return. He ranked second in the league in receiving yards per game at 73.9 and third in the SoCon in receptions per game at 5.5. Washington caught 60 passes for 813 yards and nine touchdowns. He finished the season with 1,938 all-purpose yards.

Orr was one of the leaders of the Bulldogs’ offensive line this season. He started at right tackle for Samford on an offensive line that produced 100-yard rushers in four games and, despite leading the SoCon in pass attempts, was tied for fourth in fewest sacks allowed.

Simmer was a consistent presence on the Samford defensive line this season. He ranked fourth on the team with 35 tackles, including 28 solo stops. He was also second on the team in tackles for loss with 7.0 tackles for a loss of 30 yards. He also produced 2.0 sacks for 15 total yards.

Vice ranked second on the team in receiving with 44 catches for 518 yards this season. He hauled in four touchdown passes during the year. His most impressive game came at Florida when he caught four passes for 94 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.

As a young player stepping up, Brooks saw action in all 11 games and started the final seven games of the season at left guard. He was one of the key players on the Bulldogs’ offensive line throughout the season.
