Volleyball season returns to where it began for Region play

MOBILE, Ala. (November 22, 2021) – On Monday night, the Spring Hill College (SHC) volleyball team learned that it will travel 68 miles down Interstate 10 to Pensacola, Fla. to face the 5th-ranked and top-seeded University of West Florida (UWF) Argonauts on Thursday, December 2 in the opening round of the 2021 NCAA Division II South Region Volleyball Championship Tournament.

As the 2021 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) regular season and tournament champions, the Badgers (30-5) earned an automatic bid to the South Region Championship for the third consecutive season, previously appearing in 2018 and 2019. The Badgers opted out of the 2020-21 season due to the Covid-19 Global Pandemic.

The Badgers and the Argonauts (33-1) have squared off twice in the 2021 season with UWF earning wins on both occasions. The two teams faced each other on the opening day of the year at the Springhill Suites Invitational hosted by the Argos in the UWF Field House on September 3 where the home team took a 3-0 (25-21; 25-17; 25-21) victory. They met again on the Badgers’ home court in Mobile on September 28 with UWF once more winning 3-0 (25-18; 25-13; 25-21).

With a long-time non-conference rivalry that dates back to 2001, the Argonauts hold a decided 18-0 advantage in the series between the two programs. This meeting will be the teams’ first postseason tilt.

Both teams emerged from their conference regular seasons and tournaments with undefeated marks as SHC was 17-0 in the SIAC and UWF was 16-0 in the Gulf South Conference (GSC).

The Argos have made steady progress up the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Coaches Poll this year. They began the year in the “Receiving Votes” category in the Preseason Poll, moved up to No. 15 in the nation by the time the Badgers met them again on September 28, found themselves at No. 7 last week, and are now No. 5 in the latest poll released on Monday.
