McQuirter Shines In Bulldogs Quarterfinal Sweep Of ETSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford volleyball advanced to the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals with a dominant sweep over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers, Friday.

It was a long-awaited match for fans in the Pete Hana Center as the Bulldogs finally took the court to face the ETSU Buccaneers. In a day where top seeds seemed doomed to fall, the Bulldogs looked to book a spot in the semifinals with a hot start in opening set. Much of the early goings were back-and-forth with Samford taking a slim two-point lead into the media timeout. However, out of the break the Bulldogs extended their lead to five before closing the set on a five-point run (25-17).
In the second frame, Kate Wonus opened with a four-point service run as Kenya McQuirter and Briana Holmes took control of the Bulldog offense. The Bulldogs continued to pour on the offense opening a point lead behind a seven-point run forcing a timeout from the Buccaneers. Despite ETSU’s efforts to find their footing offensively it was all Samford in the second set as the Bulldogs wrapped up the frame 25-9.
The Bulldogs took all the momentum into the third set, but ETSU opened on a 3-1 run, before Samford rattled off seven-straight points forcing an early timeout from the Buccaneers (8-3). ETSU battled back to tie the set at 13-13, but just when it looked like Samford was going to run away with the final set ETSU clawed back in the set. But it was Samford that turned it on finishing the match on a six-point run to sweep the Buccaneers on Quarterfinal Friday (25-18).

  • It was the Kenya McQuirter show, as the redshirt-sophomore led the entire ETSU squad in kills for most of the match totaling 21 kills and two blocks in the Samford sweep.
  • Sarah Hayes Farley recorded eight kills on the night with zero errors and a .533 hitting percentage.
  • Deaton and Kayla Keshock both posted double-digits in the dig column tallying 13 and 10 respectively, while Deaton added seven kills and Keshock recorded 33 assists.

It will be an all Bulldog affair in the nightcap tomorrow as the #3 Samford Bulldogs will face off against #7 The Citadel.
