Samford Downs Oregon State 78-77; Four Bulldogs Finish In Double Digits

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Samford University men’s basketball team placed four Bulldogs (3-1) in double figures en route to a 78-77 victory over the Oregon State University Beavers (1-3) on Thursday, Nov. 18 at Gill Coliseum. Ques Glover led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Jaden Campobell (14), Jermaine Marshall (14) and Cooper Kaifes (11) also turned in double digits. OSU’s Warith Alatishe led all scorers with 20 points.
 
The Bulldogs built a 10-point halftime advantage and trailed the Beavers for a mere :22 all night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a 3-pointer by Cooper Kaifes and a pair of free throws by Wesley Cardet, Jr., with 18:23 to play in the first half.
  • Fueled by a tenacious defensive start by the Bulldogs, holding OSU to just two points and scoreless for the last 2:25, Jermaine Marshall’s deep 3-pointer extended Samford’s lead to eight, 10-2, at the under 16 media timeout.
  • Ahmad Rand’s dunk with 14:59 to go in the first ended a 2:50 scoring drought by the Beavers and cut the deficit to six, 10-4.
  • OSU clawed back into the game with a 6-0 run to cut the Samford lead to one, 13-12, at the 11:51 media timeout. Maurice Calloo had four of the six for the Beavers.
  • Out of the timeout, a quick lay-up by Cardet and a wing 3-pointer by Jacob Tryon extended Samford’s advantage to six, 18-12, with 10:04 to go in the half.
  • OSU answered with another 4-0 run, but Jaden Campbell canned his second 3-pointer of the night to push the Bulldogs’ lead back to five, 21-16.
  • Both teams turned up the offensive intensity over the next 4:29, as the Bulldogs led by six, 35-30 with 3:30 remaining in the half. Ques Glover had six points with Kaifes and Campbell adding three apiece during the stretch. Jarod Lucas answered with seven for OSU over the same time frame.
  • Campbell’s third 3-pointer of the half and a pair of free throws by Glover gave the Bulldogs their biggest lead of the night, 10, 42-32, with less than a minute to go in the first half.
  • The Bulldogs closed the half on a 5-0 run over the final 1:57 of the half to maintain their 10-point lead, 42-32, at the break. Samford’s defense held OSU scoreless for the final 2:22 of the half.
  • Oregon State opened the second half on a 9-0 run, including five from Rand, to cut the deficit to one, 42-41. Coach Bucky McMillan called his first timeout of the second period to slow down the Beavers.
  • Out of the timeout, the Bulldogs outscored OSU 7-2 to lead 49-43 at the 15:44 media timeout. A pair of layups by Glover and Cardet, and Tryon’s second 3-pointer provided the spark.
  • The game of runs continued for OSU with another 6-0 spurt, as Warith Alatishe’s dunk got the Beavers back within two, 51-49, with 12:59 to play.
  • A pair of Jaron Rillie 3-pointers and a layup by the freshman point guard kept the margin at five, 59-54, with 10:32 on the clock.
  • Samford used back-to-back turnovers and a pair of layups by Campbell and Marshall to build the lead back to eight, 64-56, with 8:18 to play and a forcing an OSU timeout.  
  • The Beavers used another 6-0 run to slice into the Samford, as the Bulldogs maintained a 64-62 lead with 5:54 left in the game.
  • With back-to-back buckets in the paint by the Beavers, OSU trailed Samford 69-68 with 3:35 on the clock, forcing a Bulldogs’ timeout.
  • McMillan’s magic out of timeouts continued, as Glover’s driving layup put the Bulldogs up 71-69 with 3:02 remaining.
  • After a pair of free throws by Lucas, Alatishe’s traditional 3-point play gave the Beavers their first lead of the night, 73-71, with 2:25 to play.
  • On the next possession, Glover drained a pair of free throws to tie the contest at 73-73.
  • Alatishe off a steal put the Beavers up 75-73, but Kaifes made it a short-lived lead with a long 3-pointer to reclaim the 76-75 advantage with :45 remaining
  • After a quick timeout by SU, Marshall put home an easy layup off Glover’s ninth assist of the night. With Samford leading 78-75, OSU took its second timeout of the half.
  • Deshawn Davis cut it to one for the Beavers, 78-77, with :22 left on a slashing layup.
  • Both teams had multiple opportunities over the final :20, as the Bulldogs held on for the 78-77 victory.                                 

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • Samford shot 56 percent in the first half after making 14-of-25 shots including 7-of-12 from 3-point range. Oregon State managed 42 percent on 11-of-26 shots but made just 3-of-12 from beyond the arc. Both teams were 7-of-8 at the free throw line.
  • Campbell led the Bulldogs and all scorers with 12 points at the half with Glover adding 10 points and four assists. Lucas paced OSU with nine.
  • The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 51 percent (28-of-55) from the floor and a blistering 44 percent (12-of-27) from 3-point range in the win.
  • Samford out-rebounded the Beavers 33-31, including three key defensive boards in the final :30 of the game.
  • Glover finished the night with 16 points, three rebounds and a career-high nine assists to lead the Bulldogs. Marshall and Campbell had 14 points apiece with Kaifes also joining the group in double figures with 11 points and a career-best six rebounds.
  • Rillie and Tryon had eight points each while Cardet closed out the scoring for Samford with seven.
  • OSU’s Alatishe led all scorers with 20 points while Rand (15), Lucas (11) and Davis (11) joined him in double digits.
  • Samford nailed five of its last seven shots from the floor en route to the win.
  • The Bulldogs led for 38:08 of the game, trailing for a mere :22 all night.          

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Samford and Oregon State were meeting for the second time in series history on the hardwood. OSU defeated Samford, 87-66, on Dec. 21, 1974, in the last meeting between the schools.
  • The Bulldogs’ starting five included Glover (G), Cardet (G), Kaifes (G), Marshall (F), and Tryon (C).
  • Oregon State was picked to finish fourth in the Pac 12 and the Beavers were coming off an Elite Eight run in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

UP NEXT:

  • The Bulldogs travel to Destin, Fla., on Nov. 26-27 for the semifinal and final round of the Emerald Coast Classic. Samford, which opens the tournament on the road at Oregon State, will begin the two-day event against North Carolina A&T on Friday, Nov. 26 at 1:30 p.m. The Bulldogs wrap-up the tournament versus either Saint Francis or McNeese State on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 12:30 p.m.
