Q&A WITH JAG BASKETBALL’S JAMAL WEST

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama men’s basketball forward Jamal West recently sat down with USAJaguars.com to discuss expectations for the upcoming season, having a leadership role and the fans being back.

West, a sophomore from Baltimore, Md., led the team in rebounding last year with 6.3 per game and finished 10th in the Sun Belt in that category.

What are your expectations for the upcoming season?
“To win the [conference] championship.”

What are the team goals and goals for you individually?
“I’m looking to become the best player that I can be.”

You and Kayo are the only returning starters, how has the process been bringing in newcomers and transfers?
“It’s been easy. We know what needs to be done to win at this level and the expectations of the program. Everyone knew it was going to be a lot of work with so many new players coming in, but being one of the returning starters and being a newcomer last season made it easy to lead.”

How long did it take to develop some team chemistry with so many newcomers?
“A few days before the semester started, we all got together to play pick up and started to build a bond.”

What type of leadership role have you assumed?
“Just spreading the culture and expectations of the program to my new teammates.”

How has having so many new pieces translated on the court so far?
“It’s been good. We have the pieces that we need so they fit in the right places.”

What made you choose South Alabama?
“Basketball.”

What is your favorite memory at South so far?
“After we win games.”

How much are you looking forward to having fans back at full capacity and things returning back to somewhat normal for this season?
“I’m excited about it. We get to have fans come support us and they help keep the energy high.”

How difficult was it playing in limited capacity – sometimes empty – arenas last year? Did you have to try to create your own energy?
“It was difficult because me and the team had to step up, but it was also easy because you didn’t have the negative energy in the stands [on road games].”
