Alabama State returns home to host Texas Southern on Saturday


MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State returns home following a four-game homestand to play a pair of games in five days beginning with Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon.

The game is scheduled to kick at 2:05 pm and can be seen on ESPN+ as part of Military Appreciation Day on the Alabama State campus. Prior to the game, four F-16s will fly over the stadium in honor of those military men and women who have served the United States.

Alabama State (3-6, 2-5 SWAC) is looking to end a four-game losing streak and will look to do so at home, a place where they are undefeated through three games this season. The Hornets are averaging 29 points per game at home and have scored 30 or more points in their last two home games. The game against the Tigers will be the first of two in five days as Alabama State will return to action at home on Thanksgiving Day.

  • Alabama State looks to end a four-game losing streak with all four games coming away from home. During that stretch, the Hornets have averaged 21.5 points per game offensively.
  • The Hornets and Texas Southern have not met since the fall of 2019 when Alabama State captured a 27-21 victory in Houston.
  • Joshua Knight (Montgomery, Ala.), playing in place of the injured Jeremiah Hixon (Monroeville, Ala.), recorded seven catches against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday for 104 yards. The total was three more than Knight had for the entire season coming into the game.
  • Hixon has missed the last two games after aggravating an injury against Alabama A&M in the Magic City Classic and continues to lead the team with 38 receptions for 496 yards.
  • Jacory Merritt (Montgomery, Ala.) had the longest run from scrimmage last week with a 45-yard run against Mississippi Valley State.
  • Irshaad Davis (Carol City, Fla.) leads the team in tackles with 55 total, while Christian Clark (Cleveland, Ohio) and Nicholas Terry (Youngstown, Ohio) each have 33.
  • The special teams unit has come up big for Alabama State lately and it started at home with 37-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Keenan Isaac (Midfield, Ala.) against UAPB. The Hornets also have a punt return for a touchdown following a 60-yard return by Robert McMinn (Hollywood, Fla.) last week. Meanwhile, Hunter Hanson (Montgomery, Ala.) has converted on each of his extra point opportunities (11) and has made three consecutive field goals over the last four games.
