Bulldogs To Host Gamecocks On Wednesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Bulldogs (1-1, 0-0 SoCon) of Samford University are set to host the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks (1-1, 0-0 ASUN) on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at the Pete Hanna Center. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+. Curt Bloom, Blake Gardner, and Lindsay Cagle will have the call.

Samford and Jacksonville State are meeting for the 34th time on the hardwood with the Bulldogs owning an 18-15 edge in the series standings. JSU defeated SU, 63-46, on Dec. 16, 2020 in the last meeting between the schools while Samford has won seven of the last 10.

The Samford Bulldogs (101, 0-0 SoCon) defeated the Montevallo Falcons 75-50 on Sunday, Nov. 14 in their home opener at the Pete Hanna Center. Andrea Cournoyer led Samford with 21 points and six rebounds with Shauntai  Battle scoring 14 points and Annie Ramil adding 10. Freshman Sanaa Redmond dished out a career-high nine assists for the Bulldogs. Montevallo was led by Savannah Lee with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Jacksonville State Gamecocks (1-1, 0-0 ASun) enter Wednesday’s game at Samford coming off a 69-58 loss at Davidson despite a furious second half comeback on Sunday. Three players scored in double-figures for JSU, led by 15 from Imari Martin, the games leading scorer. Shawnta Shaw added a career-high 13 points off the bench while Kianna Johnson contributed 10 points.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
Samford will play a formidable non-conference schedule for a third-straight year under head coach Carley Kuhns. The Bulldogs will square-off on the road with No. 9 Iowa (11.11), Jacksonville State (11.17), Southern Miss (11.20), Colorado (11.22), Northern Colorado (11.26), Troy (12.1), Ole Miss (12.17), and LSU (12.27). SU will host Jacksonville State (11.17), Murray State (12.4), Alabama A&M (12.9), UAB (12.12), and Kennesaw State (12.29).

The Bulldogs enter this week’s games with Jacksonville State and Southern Miss averaging 64.5 points per game to rank third in the SoCon. SU is fifth in scoring defense at 70.5 points allowed per contest.

Junior guard Andrea Cournoyer enters the week ranked No. 2 in the SoCon in scoring at 18.0 points per game. The Merryville, La., native, played in 22 games for the Bulldogs while being named the 2020-21 SoCon Player of the Year. Cournoyer averaged a league-high 18.4 points per game while contributing 3.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Cournoyer was also a unanimous selection to the 2020-21 All-SoCon First Team. She rates as one of the nation’s top 30 returning scorers for the 2021-22 campaign.

Freshman guard Sanaa Redmond is currently leading the SoCon in assists per game at 7.0 per game.

Senior guard Shauntai Battle is back after an injury-shortened 2020-21 campaign. The Mobile, Ala., native, is averaging 11.5 points per game so far this season. Known as one of the league’s top defenders, Battle was named to the 2019-2020 All-SoCon Defensive Team after helping lead the Bulldogs to the regular season and tournament titles.  

Junior forward Annie Ramil has been a menace on the boards, averaging 10.0 rebounds and 8.0 points per game. She turned in a season-high 15 rebounds at No. 9 Iowa in the season-opener. The Binghamton, N.Y., native, played in all 25 games for Samford last year,  making 25 starts at forward, while averaging 11.0 points and a team-leading 8.2 rebounds per game.  

Freshman forward Kiersten Nelson has been a major factor for the Bulldogs in her first two games of the year, averaging a career-best 9.0 points per game.

Freshman guard Mattie Hatcher is shooting a blistering 44.4 percent from 3-point range to rank fifth in the SoCon. She is averaging 6.0 points per game.

Entering her final season with the Bulldogs, senior center Natalie Armstrong is looking to solidify one of the most memorable runs in recent Samford history. The three-time All-SoCon Team selection has played in 112 games for the Bulldogs, scoring 1,163 points in her illustrious career while averaging 10.4 points per game. The Norcross, Ga., native, has also cleared 562 career rebounds and blocked 122 shots. She led the SoCon in blocks (43) in 2020-21 while averaging 12.7 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest. In 2019-20, Armstrong was named the SoCon Tournament MVP after draining the game-winning three-pointer to propel the Bulldogs past UNCG and into the NCAA Tournament.

Samford enters the 2021-22 campaign picked to finish second in both the Southern Conference Preseason Coaches’ & Media Polls. The Bulldogs have captured back-to-back SoCon Regular Season Championships in coach Carley Kuhns first two seasons with Samford. Junior guard Andrea Cournoyer was picked to repeat as the league’s Player of the Year while senior center Natalie Armstrong and junior forward Annie Ramil were also named to the All-SoCon Preseason Team. 

FACE THE FOE: JACKSONVILLE STATE
The Jacksonville State Gamecocks (1-1, 0-0 ASun) enter Wednesday’s game at Samford coming off a 69-58 loss at Davidson despite a furious second half comeback on Sunday. Three players scored in double-figures for JSU, led by 15 from Imari Martin, the games leading scorer. Shawnta Shaw added a career-high 13 points off the bench while Kianna Johnson contributed 10 points.

The Gamecocks are averaging 73.5 points per game while allowing 54.0 per contest. Jacksonville State held NCAA DII opponent Auburn-Montgomery to just 39 points in the season-opener.  

Senior guard Imari Martin leads JSU in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game. The Hazel Green, Ala., native,  is 5-of-14 from 3-point range as well.

NeKiyah Thompson, a 5-6 junior guard from Atlanta, Ga., is also averaging in double figures at 12.0 per game. The former Frederick Douglas HS standout scored a season-high 18 points in JSU’s win over AUM.

Redshirt senior Kennedy Gavin has been a force on the glass for the Gamecocks, averaging a team-high 11.5 rebounds per game. The Petal, Miss., native, recorded a double-double versus AUM with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

The Bulldogs travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., on Saturday, Nov. 20 to face the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. at Reed-Green Coliseum.
