LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Nominees for the 2021 Broyles Award were announced by the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation on Monday, with the University of South Alabama’s Corey Batoon included among the candidates for the honor presented to the top assistant coach in college football.

The Jaguars’ first-year defensive coordinator and safeties coach was one of 59 nominees selected from a pool of approximately 1,270 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision assistant coaches across the country.  A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the Football Writers Association of America will select 15 semifinalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner.

Batoon has led a unit this fall that leads the Sun Belt Conference in rushing, total, team passing efficiency, third-down conversion and red zone defense — standing among the top 25 nationally in each category — after ranking in the bottom half of the league in each of those statistics a year ago.  Under his direction, the Jaguars have forced 22 turnovers and are on track to allowed the fewest total yards per game since the 2012 season, both figures that are on pace to rank among the top five in program history.

Since the start of conference play last month, South has limited undefeated West Division leader Louisiana to less than 300 yards of total offense while not allowing the Ragin’ Cajuns to score over the final 40 minutes of the contest and held East Division front-runner Appalachian State more than 130 yards below its season average last time out.

The Jaguars conclude non-conference play on Saturday when they visit Tennessee, with kickoff at Neyland Stadium scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (CST) on ESPNU.
