MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo volleyball unit edged Mississippi College 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Trustmark Arena. With the win the Falcons conclude the regular season with a 18-13 record and a 9-7 GSC record while the Choctaws slip to 8-15 for a 6-9 conference record.
The match began with a brief ceremony honoring Montevallo’s lone senior Evelina Teran for her accomplishments during her career at UM. The Falcons traded points throughout the first set with neither team able to lead by more than two points. UM survived MC 26-24 to take the first set of the match.
The Choctaws didn’t waiver in the following set as they managed to create six point lead towards the end of the set. Montevallo battled but Mississippi College held on to win the second set 25-20 to even the match 1-1.
The Falcons held their composure against the gritty Mississippi College unit, battling for a 25-22 victory in set three. The intensity of the match was consistent during the fourth set with both teams trading points, until Mississippi College rounded out the set with a three-point run to win the set 25-21.
Montevallo regained control in the fifth set, outlasting the Choctaws 15-9 to take the 3-2 victory.
The Falcons were led by Elizabeth Wilzbach who put down 20 kills for a .559 percentage along with three blocks. Sav Roys was a major catalyst for the Falcons on offense dishing out 19 assists with 13 digs, two aces, and a kill. Casey Hendrixson led the Montevallo defense with 17 digs and three assists.
UP NEXT: The Falcons will travel to Pensacola on Friday, November 19th for the opening round of the GSC Championship Tournament.
