The American Christian Academy Patriots offense was on display Friday night, especially in the second half, in it’s victory over the Jacksonville High Golden Eagles 49-35.
The game went to the half with the two teams tied up at 21 points, but ACA broke through with four touchdowns in the second half, one that came on a fumble recovery from Carson Sute, to complete their bid to move on to the third round.
“We knew they were a really, really good football team and we knew it was going to be a tough fight. So, I just told our guys (at the half) you know, warriors keep fighting. Losing wasn’t an option for us,” said ACA head coach Cody Martin.
Junior quarterback Sawyer Deerman completed 11-of-15 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns on the night, in addition to 96 yards and two touchdowns rushing on nine carries.
He connected with junior Chance Henderson for two of those passing touchdowns and junior Davis Dare for the third. Henderson caught three passes on the night for 63 yards total. Senior Christian Davis had a great night of his own, running for 96 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown.
Jacksonville went ahead early, and kept that lead until right before halftime. Sophomore quarterback Jim Ogle completed 18 of his 28 pass attempts for 179 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Ky’dric Fisher caught one of Ogle’s passes in the endzone for 24 yards and a touchdown. The other was caught by senior Quintavius Long for 29 yards.
Senior running back Jae-Taj Morris was the real star of the night for the Golden Eagles in the loss, carrying the ball 24 times for 212 yards and three touchdowns. His longest run of the game was a 48 yarder that set up a score and kept the Eagles in the game until they gave up a fumble and interception to end their last two drives.
The Patriots will be heading down to Prichard, AL to take on the Vigor Wolves in round three of the playoffs next Friday night.
