UAB Faces Opens Regular Season With Shorter on Wednesday

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women’s basketball team begins the 2021-22 regular season by hosting Shorter College on Wednesday night at Bartow Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
 
UAB LATELY
Four Blazers scored in double-figures led by Zakyia Weathersby’s team-high 20 points in UAB’s 85-57 victory over Spring Hill in an exhibition game on Nov. 5. Destinee McGhee scored 13 and Maria Roters 11 for the Blazers. Caitlynn Daniels had 10 points and a game-high six assists.
 
SHORTER LATELY
Shorter is a Division II school located in Rome Ga. The Hawks play in the Gulf South Conference and were selected to finish 13th of 13 teams in the GSC preseason poll. Azaria Howard and Tiara Lewis were selected to the Preseason All-Conference Team. The Hawks won both their preseason games – 72-68 over Brenau and 78-75 against Central Georgia Tech.
 
BLAZERS IN SEASON OPENERS
Wednesday marks the 44th season of UAB women’s basketball. The Blazers are 20-23 all-time in season openers dating back to Nov. 29, 1978. UAB has won its last five lid lifters.
 
BLAZERS IN HOME OPENERS
UAB is 30-13 in home openers, including a 24-9 record at Bartow Arena.
 
PROMOTIONS
Fans who bring printed or mobile from the Nov. 9 UAB men’s basketball ticket will get free admission to the Shorter contest.
 
SALUTE TO SERVICE
Fans who have a military ID can purchase a ticket for Wednesday’s game for $2.
 
UAB FOOD DRIVE
The Blazers are hosting a canned food drive for the Shorter contest benefiting the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama. Each donated canned item will earn fans a $2 ticket into the game. One ticket per canned item donated.
 
FREE PIZZA
The team will be providing free pizza for student at Wednesday’s game. 

UP NEXT
UAB hits the road to face Chicago State on Nov. 13 with a noon tipoff. The Blazers return home on Nov. 19 against Mississippi Valley State. Note the new start time against MVSU is now 11 a.m.

Women’s Basketball season tickets are on sale by purchasing the 2021-22 Gold Card for $65 here. The 2021-22 Gold Card will get you access to all home events for Women’s Soccer, Men’s Soccer, Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, Softball, and Baseball (Regions Field & Young Memorial). This card is not valid for Conference USA or NCAA Championship events.
 
INDIVIDUAL TICKETS
Tickets for individual games can be purchased here. Tickets are $5 for adults or $3 for those 18 or younger.
 
 
UAB BASKETBALL AT BARTOW ARENA
UAB requires wearing a mask indoors – regardless of vaccine status – unless actively eating or drinking and encourages masks during outdoor events, alongside regular handwashing.
