Falcons fall 2-1 in playoff upset against Spring Hill

MONTEVALLO – The Montevallo men’s soccer team fell short 2-1 at the hands of Spring Hill, Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field.  With the loss the Falcons slip to 13-3-2 for a 8-3-1 conference record with Spring Hill advancing to 11-7 and 6-5 in conference.

Never question the effort and heart of the guys, thats something that this group has shown all year,” said head coach Bruce Dietterle.  “We didn’t execute the game plan and couldn’t finish any balls, and they were there more in big moments than we were.”

The Falcons were the first team to score only taking 9:49 for Cyprien N’Goma to find Edorta Cabieces Sanz for an early lead.  The Falcons held the edge through halftime ending the first period with a 1-0 lead.

The Badgers kept fighting for a goal in the second half and found one in the 61st minute off of the boot of Matthew Moreno with Diogo Sousa providing service.  Spring Hill put together an additional goal seven minutes later to provide them with a 2-1 lead with 21:50 left in the match.  The Falcons had theuir chances to notch the match but could not find a goal in the remaining minutes of the evening.

“It was an all team effort,” mentioned Spring Hill head coach Chris Leonardi.  We kept our composure, we talked about being there for the second chance and it was there in the end.  Our goal keeper made two great saves in the last ten minutes, and I thought the boys defended well.  We have nine seniors on this team and they don’t want to be done just yet.  This [Montevallo] was a very good team, winning the conference, Bruce did a great job this year.  Its only going to get tougher.”
