UAB Clinches Spot in Conference USA Tournament

RUSTON- UAB Volleyball defeated Louisiana Tech 3-0 in the second of two matches this weekend. Alex Kells recorded 18 kills, Lidya Canturk recorded 39 assists, Sam Gomez and Chloe Rodriguez each recorded eight kills. 
The Blazers (11-13, 6-6) rode a strong start in the first set, and went up 12-6. LA Tech (9-19, 1-11) scored four in a row, before UAB scored 7 in a row to eventually make the score 22-13. UAB went on to take the first set 25-14.
In the second set, UAB held a 21-14 lead, before LA Tech fought back to get within one at 21-20. The Blazers regained control to take the set 25-21. 
Set number three saw UAB clinch the match with a powerful display of offense. UAB went on prolonged scoring runs, one of which included five points in a row. LA Tech kept fighting to move the score to 24-19, but UAB scored the final point to secure the set 25-22, and the match 3-0. 
With this win, the Blazers qualify for the Conference USA championships, which will be held in Norfolk, Virginia on November 19-21. 
“This season has been really challenging, mentally, physically & emotionally for everyone, and we could not be more proud of our team and the effort they gave to finish out the regular season on a high note.” Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. “They have continued to learn how to fight, grow and endure when faced with adversity, and their perseverance has paid off with back to back to trips to the CUSA Championships. We are certainly going to celebrate and enjoy the wins from this weekend, and then it’s back to work to prepare for a great conference tournament. We scheduled with this goal in mind and are glad we have familiarity with Old Dominion’s gym having played there earlier this fall and look forward to being back in Norfolk.” 
UAB will play in the Conference USA Championship on November 19-21.
