REGULAR SEASON CHAMPS: Men’s soccer edges AUM 1-0 in the final seconds of OT

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Montevallo men’s soccer team took a 1-0 win over in-state rival Auburn Montgomery in an overtime thriller, to close out the season in Montgomery, Thursday evening.  With the win the Falcons are crowned regular season champions for the GSC tallying a 13-2-2 and a 8-2-1 GSC record, while AUM drops to 9-5-2 with a 7-3-2 conference record.

“The best way I can explain this game is to tell you how happy I am for these guys,” said head coach Bruce Dietterle. “I’ve asked a lot of them. A lot of these guys have been through some hard times. I’ve asked them to not only believe in me, but believe in themselves. That isn’t always easy. Tonight they showed their strength, power, and skill. I am proud to be apart of this family.”

Both teams took the pitch for a battle that would settle the score of the best team in the state and the Gulf South Conference for the concluding match of the regular season. Both teams had their chances during the game notching multiple shot attempts but neither teams managed to find a goal in 90 minutes.

The Falcons were scrappy in the overtime period, covering as much ground defensively as they could to keep the Warhawks away from the UM net.  An AUM foul gave the Falcons prime real estate for a free kick opportunity near the Warhawk net in the final moments of the first overtime.  Montevallo failed to convert the free kick but the Falcons did not let up on the opportunity and fought their way for a goal during the final seconds of the period. Edin Hernandez played a ball for Mario Gratzl to find a crease in the AUM defense to score the game winning goal with 00:03 left in the match.

Salvador Plaza was in goal for the shutout making two saves on 11 shot attempts with a totla of 99:57 minutes of service.

UP NEXT: With the win the Falcons are set to host the first round of the GSC Championship Tournament taking place on Sunday, November 7th.  The opponent and game time have yet to be finalized.  Keep up with the updated game time and opponent for the post season at
