Men’s Soccer Clinch GSC Championship Berth With 2-1 Win Over UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – West Alabama men’s soccer team clinched a GSC Championship berth with a 2-1 win over Alabama Huntsville Thursday night at Charger Park in Huntsville, Alabama to close out its regular season. 

With the win, the Tigers ended the regular season with a 7-9 overall record and went 5-6 in GSC play. The Chargers’ season ended with a 7-7-2 overall record and 4-6-1 conference record. 

A foul called on an Alabama Huntsville defender allowed West Alabama a penalty kick in the first three minutes of the match. Vince Stans took the kick and kicked it right past the Chargers’ goalkeeper to give UWA a 1-0 lead over UAH. 

Peter Oyetunji subbed in for Stans and found the back of the net in his first seven minutes of action. Oyetunji scored off an assist from Richard Lopez and Reda Ikarrain in the 39th minute, giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage over the Chargers before heading into halftime. 

Both teams held each other scoreless in the second half of the match until the Tigers scored an own goal in the 87th minute to produce the 2-1 final score. 

Harry Deveney was between the posts for the Tigers. The Liverpool, England native recorded one save in his 90 minutes of action. The Chargers’ goalie Ethan Haworth recorded three saves in his 90 minutes of action. 

The Tigers outshot the Chargers by a 9-7 margin and held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Two yellow cards and 25 fouls were called in the physical contest. UAH was called for 13 fouls, while UWA was called for 12.

The first round of the GSC Championship Tournament will begin Sunday, Nov. 7. The Tigers will battle No. 2 Auburn Montgomery in the first round of postseason play at AUM Soccer Complex in Montgomery, Alabama. 

After the first round all matches will be played at Ashton Brosnaham Park in Gonzalez, Florida. Semifinals will be held November 12 with the championship match being November 14. Kickoff times for all matches will be announced as the conference releases more information.
