Chargers Continue Postseason with NCAA South Region Championships Saturday

ST. LEO, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to run at the 2021 NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Abbey Couse, hosted by Saint Leo and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission.
The women’s six-kilometer race will begin at 7:30 a.m. CT, followed by the men’s 10-kilometer race at 8:45 a.m. CT.
The top three teams from each race will advance to the 2021 NCAA Cross Country National Championships on Nov. 20, which are also at the Abbey Course in St. Leo, Florida. The top 25 finishers will be named to the All-South Region squad.
The Chargers men’s team – the No. 9 team in the nation – enters the 2021 NCAA South Regional as the reigning champion as UAH won the 2019 edition for the program’s second regional title. The 2020 NCAA South Region Championships were not held due to COVID-19.
UAH is the highest nationally-ranked team in the nation in the Gulf South Conference and South Region heading into the regional, as the squad is coming off its third straight GSC Championships.
The Chargers boast six All-GSC honorees from the GSC Championships, including First Team members Jay Day, Allan Anderson, Jacob Bishop, Harold Lacroix, and Sam Wilhelm. Day led the Chargers at the 2019 NCAA South Regional, coming in fourth with a time of 32:24.39.
On the women’s side, UAH starts out the NCAA South Regional ranked fifth in the region after the Chargers earned third in the team competition at the GSC Championships.
Kaylee Stewart notched her fourth First Team All-GSC award to lead the Chargers, followed by Second Team All-GSC honorees Emily McMurry, Taylor Engram, and Abby Weist.
In the 2019 NCAA South Region Championships, UAH finished seventh overall with Auburn Cohan and Kaylee Stewart leading the Chargers individually in 11th and 13th, respectively.
