MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State used a balanced scoring attack to pull away from Mobile 72-47 in an exhibition contest at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Thursday night.
The Hornets had four players in double figures led by Trace Young (Owensboro, Ky.) and Jordan O’Neal (Mobile, Ala.) with 12 points each in the win. Young finished with a team-high seven rebounds and four steals in his first game in a Hornet uniform, while O’Neal finished with six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Meanwhile, Isaiah Range (Cedar Hill, Texas) and Michael Barber (Jackson, Miss.) each added 10 points for Alabama State, with Barber collecting seven rebounds. Range added five rebounds and three assists in the win.
Alabama State shot 55.2 (16-of-29) percent from the floor in the second half to pull away from the Rams who had drawn to within 12 at the break. They ended the night shooting 50.9 (28-of-55) percent from the floor and 25.0 (4-of-16) percent from beyond the arc, while hitting 75.0 (12-of-16) percent from the free throw line.
The Hornets won every statistical category apart from second chance points (14-13), outrebounding Mobile 45-30 and added a 19-2 advantage on fast break points. The largest lead of the night for Alabama State was 27 with 9:11 remaining in the game, while went on a 12-0 scoring run midway through the first half to widen the margin.
Mobile was led by Sage McKenna with 14 points on the night.
