UAB Faces Southern Miss in C-USA Semifinals

BIRMINGHAM – Two days after defeating WKU in the quarterfinal round of the 2021 Conference USA Championship, the UAB women’s soccer team moves one step closer to its third league championship when it plays Southern Miss in the semifinal round on Friday evening. Kickoff at FAU Soccer Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla. Is scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT)/7 p.m. (ET).
 
UAB LATELY
UAB is the No. 3 seed in the West. The Blazers defeated WKU 1-0 in the quarterfinal round. With the victory, UAB (7-8-3) advances to the semifinal round for the first time since 2009. Their last outright victory for UAB in the Conference USA Championship was in the 2006 title game against Colorado College.
 
SOUTHERN MISS LATELY
The Golden Eagles (9-3-3) are the No. 1 seed in the West. USM defeated Florida Atlantic 2-1 in the quarterfinal round.
 
THE SERIES VS. SOUTHERN MISS
The teams have met 24 times, with UAB holding a 15-6-3 advantage. Earlier this season, Laura Zemberyova found the back of the net with 1:55 remaining in the 2nd overtime to give UAB a 2-1 victory on Oct. 1. The teams have met once in the Conference USA Championship in 2018.
 
Friday’s match will make Southern Miss UAB’s most played opponent with 25 matches. The Blazers’ 15 victories over the Golden Eagles are most of any UAB opponent.
 
COMMON OPPONENTS       
The teams have six common opponents this season – Alabama, LA Tech, North Texas, Rice, UTSA and UTEP.
 
FRIDAY FACT             
UAB is 10-3-2 when they play Southern Miss on a Friday.
 
GIMME FIVE 
UAB’s five match undefeated streak (4-0-1) is the longest since the Blazers went on a nine match unbeaten streak from Sept. 1 to Oct. 6, 2017 (6-0-3).
 
UP NEXT
The winner of Friday’s match will face the winner of Middle Tennessee and Rice on Nov. 7 at noon (CT)/1 p.m. (ET) for the 2021 Conference USA title.
 
UAB’S C-USA USA CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY     
The Blazers have won a pair of Conference USA Championship, taking home the crown in 2004 and 2006. This marks UAB’s 17th appearance in the Conference USA Championship. Overall in 25 matches, UAB is 7-12-6. In the six ties, the Blazers have won four of those on PKs.
 
FIVE BLAZERS NAMED C-USA ALL-CONFERENCE
Stella Kiss, Lexxe Lipsey, Kendall Page, Laura Zemberyova and Asha Zuniga have been named to Conference USA All-Conference Teams, the league office announced on Nov. 1. Lipsey and Zemberyova were named to the Second Team. Kiss and Zuniga were named to the Third Team while Page was named to the All-Freshman Team.
 
SCHOLARS AND BALLERS 
Stella Kiss, Audria Wood and Lexxe Lipsey were all named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team, the league announced Oct.29. Kiss and Wood were named to the first team, while Lipsey was named to the second team.
