Badgers fall in 1-0 heartbreaker to UWF

MOBILE, Ala. (November 4, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men’s soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 Gulf South Conference (GSC) loss to the University of West Florida (UWF) Argonauts on Thursday afternoon at Library Field.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the Argos (10-3-2; 7-3-1 GSC) and the Badgers continued to battle well into the second half before Keegan Ancelin of UWF cleaned up the blocked shot of teammate Keegan Lynch in the 67th minute from three yards out off the right post for the only score of the game.

Badger senior goalkeeper Alessandro Erdelyi (10-7) made one save against seven shots and 10 corner kicks by the Argos while West Florida’s Jihad Gomes (7-2-1) made five saves versus seven shots and five corner attempts from SHC.

After the match, SHC head coach Chris Leonardi commented, “I thought today was a very even game and that it could have gone either way. They punished us on an errant play out of the back and that was it. We are disappointed, but we worked hard this season to get in the conference tournament and we will focus on that starting tomorrow. We’re looking forward to Sunday and having our boys ready to go!”

The Badgers (10-7; 5-6 GSC) closed the 2021 regular season with a 10-7 record including a 5-6 GSC record. Both UWF and SHC will play in the 2021 GSC Championship Tournament on Sunday at times, locations, and opponents yet to be determined.
