Women’s Basketball to Host Exhibition Thursday

JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women’s basketball team will host Birmingham Southern in an exhibition match Thursday at 6 p.m. prior to the start of the regular season on Nov. 9.
Head Coach Rick Pietri enters his ninth season with the Gamecocks and is the winningest coach in program history with a 119-113 record. Pietri returns nine players from a squad that finished fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 15-9 overall record last season. Three freshman and a sophomore transfer join the returning Gamecocks for the 2021-22 season.
Six seniors return for JSU this season, including Kiana Johnson who will be playing for fifth season for Coach Pietri. Joining Johnson is Kennedy Gavin, Imari Martin, Kaiya Burnett, Kyra Williams and Shawnta Shaw.

Last season, Johnson started all 24 games for Jax State and scored 7.2 points per. Martin returns as the leading scorer for the Gamecocks after averaging 8.1 points per game in 24 appearances off the bench.

Joining the senior returners are juniors Winnie Kuimi and Nekiyah Thompson and sophomore Keiara Griffin. As a freshman Griffin played in all 24 games and made 22 starts. She recorded 5.1 rebounds per game to go along with 6.4 points per game and is the leading returning rebounder from a year ago.

In addition to the nine returners, JSU features sophomore transfer Madison McCoy and freshmen Ashuntee Weems, Shaquice May and Bre’Anna Rhodes. McCoy joins the Gamecocks this season after playing one year at Walters State College in Tennessee.
Thursday’s exhibition tips at 6 p.m. from Pete Mathews Coliseum. Admission is free for the preseason contest. Tickets for regular season games are available in advance online for $8 or $10 at the gate on gameday. For season ticket packages, visit the JSU Ticket Office or call 256-782-8499.

There will be no streaming available for Thursday’s match. All 15 regular season home games will be streamed on ESPN+ beginning with a Tuesday Nov. 9 match against AUM at 11:30 a.m.
