Football Hosts The Citadel For Homecoming Saturday

GAME NOTES: SAMFORD VS. THE CITADEL

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team will play host to The Citadel Bulldogs for the team’s 2021 homecoming game Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bobby Bowden Field at Seibert Stadium.

Samford enters the game with a record of 3-5 overall and 2-4 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs are coming off a 46-45 loss at 18th-ranked VMI last Saturday. The Citadel comes into the contest with a mark of 2-6 overall and 1-4 in league games. The visiting Bulldogs are coming off a 34-7 home loss to Mercer last Saturday.
 
Samford and The Citadel are meeting for the 15th time, with the series tied at 7-7. The teams last met on March 27, 2021, with Samford earning a 55-7 win in Charleston, S.C. The first meeting in the series came on Nov. 4, 1989, with The Citadel winning, 35-16 in Charleston.  Two of the last five meetings have gone to overtime. In 2016, The Citadel pulled out a 37-34 overtime win in Charleston. In 2019, Samford earned a 61-55 win in four overtimes at home.
 
Samford head coach Chris Hatcher talked a little about what his team faced when playing The Citadel.
 
“They’re a very physical team,” Hatcher said. “I think they’re very well coached. Defensively, you just don’t know what you’re going to get, each game they do a little something different. They’re a heavy pressure team, they do a good job of trying to confuse you. Offensively, they’re basically the only team (in the SoCon) that really runs the true option, and they do a good job at it. We’ll have to be disciplined, we’ll have to tackle and make the right fits.”
 
PUTTING UP POINTS
Over the last six-plus seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, the Samford offense has scored at least 30 points 39 times. The unit has put up at least 40 points 24 times, and at least 50 points a total of 10 times.
 
QUICK STRIKES
In six-plus seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, Samford has made a habit of quick scoring drives. In Hatcher’s time at Samford, the Bulldogs have had 156 scoring drives of two minutes or less and 69 that have lasted one minute or less.
 
BULLDOGS IN THE RED ZONE
Samford’s offense leads the Southern Conference and ranks ninth nationally in red zone offense, scoring on 92.7 percent of the team’s trips inside the red zone.
 
WELCH A RECORD BREAKER
During Samford’s 55-48 overtime loss to 15th-ranked ETSU on Sept. 25, Samford quarterback Liam Welch set Samford and Southern Conference records for passing yards (582), total offense (655), completions (56) and attempts (73). The 582 passing yards broke the old record of 570 set by Welch last season against VMI.
 
WASHINGTON AMONG THE BEST
Entering Saturday’s game senior wide receiver Montrell Washington leads the nation in all-purpose yards per game (174.6 ypg.). He also leads the Southern Conference in scoring (9.8 ppg.), scoring by touchdown (9.8 ppg.) and all-purpose yards per game (174.6 ypg.).
 
SAMFORD IN THE SOCON STATISTICS
In addition to the impressive Red Zone numbers, Samford leads the Southern Conference in scoring offense (37.0 ppg.), total offense (460.8 ypg.), passing offense (322.4 ypg.), punt return average (13.1 ypr.) and first downs (23.0 pg.). Individually, Liam Welch leads the league in passing (322.4 ypg.) and total offense (364.4 ypg.).
 
GRADUATE STUDENTS MAKING AN IMPACT
Samford has eight graduate students on its 2021 roster. Dakota Chapman (RB), Nathan East (LB), Armond Lloyd (DL), Coutrell Plair (CB), Tyler Russell (LS), Seth Simmer (DL), Liam Welch (QB) and Deandre Williams (RB) are all earning graduate degrees at Samford.
 
SAMFORD AGAINST SOUTH CAROLINA TEAMS
Samford has an all-time record of 40-28-1 against teams from the state of South Carolina, including a mark of 7-7 against Saturday’s opponent, The Citadel.
 
SAMFORD AT BOBBY BOWDEN FIELD AT SEIBERT STADIUM
Samford has a record of 174-83-4 in games played at Bobby Bowden Field at Seibert Stadium. This season, Samford has five home games on its schedule, and the Bulldogs are currently 1-2 in those contests. Last season, Samford posted a record of 3-1 in home games. In the last nine-plus years, Samford has a combined record of 41-14 when playing in the friendly confines. In six-plus seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, Samford has a record of 24-10 when playing at home.
 
AGAINST SOUTHERN CONFERENCE TEAMS
Since joining the Southern Conference in 2008, Samford has posted a record of 58-49 in conference games. All-time against the current members of the SoCon, Samford has a mark of 84-79-4, including a 7-7 record against The Citadel. Samford’s all-time record against each current SoCon team is: Chattanooga (10-33-3), The Citadel (7-7), ETSU (6-3), Furman (11-12), Mercer (14-13-1), VMI (6-3), Western Carolina (16-3) and Wofford (14-5).
 
SPREADING THE BALL AROUND
Samford graduate quarterback Liam Welch has done a good job of spreading the ball around so far this season. Welch has completed passes to 17 different receivers, throwing touchdown passes to seven different receivers. Montrell Washington leads the group with 41 catches for 594 yards and seven touchdowns. 
 
THE LAST TIME AGAINST THE CITADEL
Samford and The Citadel last met on March 27, 2021, with Samford earning a 55-7 win in Charleston, S.C. Liam Welch passed for 306 yards and three touchdowns to lead Samford in the win. Welch also rushed for a career-high 139 yards and a touchdown. Jai’Rus Creamer had three catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Nathan East and Trimarcus Cheeks had 13 tackles each. Lamar Anderson also returned a fumble 68 yards for a touchdown.
 
ON THIS DATE
Samford has an all-time record of 9-6-1 in games played on Nov. 6. The last time the Bulldogs played a game on the date was in 2010, a 10-3 loss to seventh-ranked Wofford.
