Blue Picks Up 8-3 Win In Game One Of Red/Blue World Series

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Samford baseball team started its annual Red/Blue World Series on Monday with the Blue Team coming away with an 8-3 win in the seven-inning contest.

“I am a fan of the Red / Blue World Series to close out the fall,” Samford head coach Tony David said. “It will be something we do each year moving forward. The guys love it. They compete hard against each other and have a spirited good time. We want intense enthusiasm as they compete.”

Samford’s lone senior pitcher Garrett Brown started the game for the Red team with two clean innings. The Red team got off to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning with a lead-off single from Garrett Howe and then two batters later Stephen Klein singled and scored Howe to give the Red team a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning the Blue team answered right back. Maurice Hampton Jr. led off the inning with a lead-off single then stole second and third base. The next batter Kace Garner, who continued his hot fall at the plate, hit a long two-run home run over left center field to make the score 2-1.

In the top of the sixth inning the Blue team took a commanding lead. Will David, John Andrew Cash, Maurice Hampton Jr., and Garner all had base hits in the inning. Garner started the scoring with a line drive to left center field. They added six runs total to extend the lead to 8-1 for the Blue Team.

“Kace has had an incredible fall at the plate and catching,” David said. “His power and run production has been there and consistent from his first swing in September. Howe is another one that has continued his hot fall, and after an unbelievable weekend against Monroe, he continued it today.”

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Red team pushed back and plated a run with a base hit by Matthew Strand to make the score 8-2. The Red team added one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning off a solo blast by Brayden Broome to left center which made the final score 8-3.

Some of the top performers from game one for the Red team were Garrett Brown with two shutout innings pitched and Brayden Broome who was 1-for-3 at the plate with a solo home run, one run scored and one RBI.

“Broome has had a good fall at the plate and continues to show some power,” David said. “Garrett Brown is working his way back and had a couple of good outings the last two weeks.”

The Top performer for the Blue team was Timmy Watkins with three and a third innings pitched with three strikeouts, one run and only one hit given up. At the plate, the Blue team was led by Garner and David. Garner finished the game 2-for-3 with one home run, one walk, two runs scored and three RBI. David finished the game 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

“Will has been model of consistency in all areas of his game,” David said. “He is a great leader for us on and off the field.”

The Red/Blue World Series will continue Wednesday and, if necessary Friday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
