Troy Victorious on Senior Night After Sweep of Appalachian State

TROY, Ala. – It was a victorious senior night for the Trojans as they defeated Appalachian State in three sets (25-23, 25-20, 25-23) in their final home game of the season from Trojan Arena Saturday night. With the win, the Trojans have now finished with three consecutive seasons with a winning record in the Sun Belt Conference for the first time in program history.

“I think we had good composure down the stretch,” head coach Josh Lauer said. “We made excellent plays when we needed to. We have a lot of contributions on this team, which has helped us on this four-game win streak. Maturity and experience matter, and this team have changed Troy volleyball, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Troy (15-9 8-5) have now won their fourth straight game. Julia Brooks led the Trojans with 10 kills on .400 hitting and two blocks. Senior Cheyenne Hayes followed with nine kills and seven digs. Amara Anderson led all players with 29 assists.

Appalachian State (7-17, 3-9) was led by Victoria Wilform, who had a match-high 11 kills. Sam Bickley had a team-high 14 assists, followed by Sophie Cain with 13. Emma Reilly led the Mountaineers with nine digs.

First Set: It was a tightly contested first set as no team saw a greater lead than three. With the set deadlocked at 21, The Trojans scored two straight points after a Julia Brooks kill. Once again, with the score tied at 23, the Trojans applied the pressure and forced two consecutive errors to claim the set 25-23.

Second Set: Like the first set, the second set saw 13 tie scores and six lead changes. The Trojans had their highest attack percent at .370. With the score of 18-19 in favor of the Mountaineers, The Trojans rattled off five straight points with kills from Halston Hillier, Cheyenne Hayes, and a service ace from Lacey Jeffcoat. That lead would hold as Hillier would finish the set with an ace to give the Trojans a two-set advantage.

Third Set: The Third set saw the Trojans with 14 kills their most of the three. The Trojans would find themselves down three with the score of 20-23 but go on to score the last five points with three attack errors by the Mountaineers and kills from Tori Hester and Halston Hillier to give Troy the sweep.

Up next: The Trojans will get a rematch with in-state rival South Alabama on November 6th.
