Jaloma, Kitum lead Gamecock teams at ASUN Championships

ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2021 cross country season came to a close on Saturday with the conclusion of the ASUN Conference championships at Walt Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Gamecocks, back in their first ASUN championships since 2002 before heading to the Ohio Valley Conference, gained plenty of experience as a couple of young squads building on the future. JSU finished 11th in both the men’s 8K and the women’s 5K events.

The Gamecock men tallied a 358 score with an average time of 28:33. Senior Alex Kitum, the only Gamecock non-freshman on the team, led the Red and White as he did much of the fall with a time of 27:55.  Rodriogo Fraga followed a few seconds behind Kitum, while Taylor Gibson in (28:45.3) was the first of three-straight Gamecocks to round out the scoring.

JSU’s ladies averaged 19:34 over their 5K course to also secure 11th ahead of Florida Gulf Coast. Sarah Jaloma paced Jax State with a time of 18:48, just ahead of teammate Bethelhem Manzano Jimano by three seconds. Sophomore Elizabeth Wetmore came across just under 30 seconds later as the only Gamecock in her running pack. Rounding out JSU’s scorers, junior Briar Poytress (20:21.1) and freshman Sierra Wainer (20:22.5) each turned in career-best times. Freshman Trinity Schraudner crossed the line just behind Wainer.

JSU had a month away from action now before the indoor track and field team takes part in its first competition of the season in early December.
