UAB Falls In Three Sets Versus Rice

BIRMINGHAM- UAB fell to Rice in the second of two matches in Bartow Arena this weekend.

The Blazers (9-13, 4-6), fought hard in every set of the game but were unable to defeat the Owls. Alex Kells had 12 kills, and Chloe Rodriguez had seven. Brianna Muller, Kiana Mack, and Lidya Canturk all recorded a service ace. Canturk also tallied 30 assists.

The first set was a close contest, with each team displaying fierce defense and precise attacks. Despite a resilient performance and a late rally from UAB, the Owls (15-5, 10-0) took the set 25-19.

Set 2 saw UAB take a 6-4 lead, but Rice took control with six points in a row, and later scored eight unanswered points to win the set 25-11.

In the third set, UAB again fought hard to stay close, beginning the set with a Brianna Muller service ace, and later tying the score at 10-10. However, Rice battled back and went on a scoring run that moved the score to 23-17. The Blazers fought to the end, but the Owls won the set 25-18, and the match 3-0.

“While we didn’t have the outcome we wanted this weekend, we learned a lot about ourselves and we did fight hard.” Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. “Alex Kells was asked to do a lot for us this weekend and was so tough. Kiana Mack is really becoming such a threat on the slide, and we need to find more ways to get her involved on the offense. Rice is a top 25 team for a reason and they played really well today. We are looking forward to physically and mentally recovering tomorrow and Tuesday this week and getting back to work for Louisiana Tech.”

The Blazers take on Louisiana Tech in Rueston, LA next weekend, November 5, and November 6 at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
