UAB Comeback Falls Short To Rice

BIRMINGHAM- UAB Volleyball fell in four sets to Rice in Bartow Arena tonight. The Blazers drop to 9-12, 4-5 on the season.
Alex Kells had 20 kills, and two service aces. Lexy Thomas and Chloe Rodriguez had nine kills each. Lidya Canturk had 43 assists, and Erin Powers had 17 digs. The UAB defense had a strong performance, holding Rice to a .213 hitting percentage, their lowest since Sept. 22.
The first set was a tough battle, with UAB and Rice (14-5, 9-0) each battling back and forth with efficiency on offense. UAB led by three points midway through the set, but Rice scored four quick points to retake the lead, and eventually won the set 25-23.
Rice found its scoring rhythm in the second set, with UAB keeping up in the early parts of the set, but Rice scored eight points in a row to go up 18-8. UAB kept fighting, but the Owls took the set 25-13.
UAB came roaring back in the third set, led by eight kills from Alex Kells. The two squads battled back and forth, with four lead changes, but thanks to three late kills in a row, The Blazers won the set 25-23.
The fourth set was a hard-fought affair. Rice jumped out to a 14-7 lead, but UAB rallied and pulled the score to 20-19.  Despite a fiery UAB offensive performance, one that saw the Blazers score three points in a row three separate times, the Owls came out on top, winning the set 25-20, and the match 3-1.
“We played hard tonight in spite of some lineup adjustments.” Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. “Alex Kells put together a 20-kill night with a double-double. Kiana Mack had a great offensive night and was really hard to stop especially on the slide. Defensively we had some good block touches to digs, we just struggled to turn it into offense at times. The great thing about this schedule is that we get another chance tomorrow. We will look to be more efficient offensively and build on our defensive effort.”
The Blazers will play the Owls again tomorrow, at 1 p.m. in Bartow Arena. Tomorrow is Halloween at Bartow, fans that attend the match wearing a Halloween costume will receive free admission.
