Alabama Volleyball Falls to Georgia in Four Sets Saturday – University of Alabama Athletics

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama earned a hard-fought win in the opening set over Georgia but ultimately fell in four sets to the Bulldogs Saturday in Foster Auditorium.

Alabama (10-12, 2-8 SEC) needed 30 points to earn a hard-fought win in the opening set over Georgia (7-14, 3-7 SEC) before the Bulldogs rallied to take the next three sets and the match. Abby Marjama led the Crimson Tide offense with a season-high 19 kills while hitting .366. Brooke Slusser finished with 39 assists, her second-highest total of the season and her highest in a four-set match. Seven different players had at least one block, leading Alabama to its highest total in SEC play this season.

The score was tied at three different points in the first half of the opening set but Alabama never trailed, leading 15-12 at the media timeout. A kill from Smith and an ace from Muckelroy stretched it to 17-12 and forced Georgia to quickly take a team timeout. The Tide remained in front until the Bulldogs rallied late to tie it at 22-22. Alabama reached set point first at 24-23 before Georgia tied it to force extra points. After four tie scores, the Tide finally pushed through to win 30-28.

Georgia scored the first four points in set two but Alabama rallied with five unanswered to take the lead. After two more tie scores, the Bulldogs gathered some momentum to pull ahead 15-11 at the media timeout. Later with Georgia up 16-14, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to lead 23-14 and held on to win the set 25-18 and even the match.

Set three was neck-and-neck to start, with Alabama only holding a one-point lead at the media timeout, 15-14. Leading by one point later at 20-19, the Tide fell behind as Georgia went on a 5-2 run to reach set point, 24-22, and win on the next rally following an Alabama timeout to take a 2-1 match lead.

Set four again saw the Tide take a one-point lead at the media timeout, 15-14. Later tied at 19-19, the Bulldogs scored four unanswered as Alabama burned both of its timeouts in the process and the Bulldogs held on to win the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.
