SHC men fall in showdown at Miss. College, 3-1

CLINTON, Miss. (October 29, 2021) – The Spring Hill College (SHC) men’s soccer team saw their three-game winning streak snapped by a 3-1 loss to the Mississippi College (MC) Choctaws in a Gulf South Conference (GSC) contest on Friday afternoon at Robert P. Longabaugh Field.

The Choctaws (9-4-1; 6-2-1 GSC) opened the scoring in just the 2nd minute with a goal from Filippo Bellu into the lower right corner of the net. Antoine Recizac made it 2-0 in favor of the home team with a nifty assist combination by Bellu and Pedro Cortes. Cortes found Bellu in the center of the box and Bellu drew the defense to the left side of the goal only to pass across the face of the goal for the poke in by Recizac from six yards out on the right side.

After the intermission, sophomore midfielder Joao Amaral put the Badgers right back into the picture in the 54th minute with a goal into the lower left corner of the frame off an assist from freshman defender Jonas Scherf.

Joshua Davies of the Choctaws, however, put a stop to the Badgers rally in the 85th minute, with a goal into the lower left of the net off a series of passes from Gonzalo Carrasco and Recizac.

Badger senior goalkeeper Alessandro Erdelyi (9-6) made seven saves against 20 shots and eight corner kicks by the Choctaws while MC’s Alejandro Chavarria (8-4-1) made three saves versus seven shots and three corner attempts from SHC.

The Badgers (9-6; 4-5 GSC) now travel to Cleveland, Miss. to face the Delta State University (DSU) Statesmen (4-6-2; 2-5-1 GSC) on Delta Field.
