UAB Celebrates Senior Day and Halloween This Weekend Against Rice

BIRMINGHAM- UAB Volleyball (9-11, 4-4) will play Rice (13-5, 8-0) in two matches in Bartow Arena Friday and Saturday.

Weekend Preview 
 
UAB is looking for an upset victory against the Owls, who come in to this weekend undefeated in conference play. Fernanda Maida has 354 kills on the season, Tatijana Fucka has 43 blocks, and Lidya Canturk has 26 service aces. Mya Michaelson, Brianna Muller, Tatijana Fucka, and Sam Gomez will be playing their last home games as Blazers. “We are looking forward to welcoming a top 25 RPI team to Bartow this weekend.” Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. “They return their same roster from this spring that is a force to be reckoned with, led by one of the best setters in the country. We’ve had a great week of practice so far and look forward to the challenge ahead. We are excited to honor our seniors: Tatijana Fucka, Sam Gomez, Mya Michaelson & Bri Muller in their last matches in Bartow. Each one of them has made an impact on our program, and this weekend is a great chance to honor and celebrate them.”
 
Scouting Rice
 
The Owls have had a strong season, and are an offensive force to be reckoned with. The Owls have received votes for nine straight weeks in the AVCA Coaches Poll, and currently rank sixth in the nation in kills per set, (6th, 14.37) and are hitting .279% as a team. Senior outside hitter Nicole Lennon is one of three active Division I players to surpass 2,000 career kills. Setter Carly Graham ranks 15th in the NCAA and leads C-USA in assists with 11.02. Rice has won 22 consecutive Conference USA matches, dating back to 2019. 
 
Special Events This Weekend
 
Friday’s match is Senior Night, and the seniors from this year’s team will be honored. It is also Youth Night, fans aged 17 and under that wear a team shirt or jersey will receive free admission. Saturday’s match will be Halloween in Bartow, and fans that attend the game wearing a Halloween costume will receive free admission. 
 
Due to the recent surge of COVID-19 and updated CDC guidance, UAB will require face masks indoors on campus – regardless of vaccine status – effective Thursday, July 29. Individuals can briefly unmask while eating or drinking.
 
Volleyball season tickets are available by purchasing the 2021-22 Gold Card for $65. This exclusive offer grants admission to all UAB men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, women’s basketball, and softball games in addition to all volleyball home contests.
