Boyd Named Preseason Player Of The Year, Booker Second Team As TU Picked Second In SIAC

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Tuskegee University men’s basketball program landed two of its own on the 2021-22 Preseason All-SIAC Teams as Gregg Boyd and Devin Booker were named to the First and Second Teams, respectively, while the former was dubbed Player of the Year.

Boyd, a senior from Seat Pleasant, Maryland, finished seventh in the NCAA with a 94% free throw percentage while leading the conference in free throws made (52) in 2020-21. He ranked third in the SIAC and led the Golden Tigers with 16.7 points per game, placed fourth in the league by averaging 2.20 three-pointers a contest and made 42.5% of his field goals (51-of-120) and 39.3% from behind the arc (24-for-61). The 5-foot-10 guard out of Largo High School was second on the team in assists (29) while also registering 28 rebounds, seven assists and two blocks. His best performance of last season came on February 13 when he dropped 30 points at Spring Hill plus he had four games with 20-plus points while registering ten points or more in all but three games.

Booker, a transfer from LeMoyne-Owen, averaged 13.2 points and four rebounds to go along with 48 assists, 29 steals and five blocks when the Magicians last hit the floor in 2019-20. The junior guard from Chicago, Illinois had a double-double of 26 points and 12 boards versus Central State that year, he scored double-digits in 15 of his 21 appearances and converted 31% of his three-point attempts (45-for-145).

The preseason poll saw only Miles projected to finish ahead of the Golden Tigers as Skegee was voted to place just behind the Golden Bears in second place.

Boyd, Booker, and the rest of Coach Benjy Taylor‘s squad will begin its quest for a title on November 12-13 when it battles both Union (Tenn.) and Shorter in DeLand, Tennessee in the South Region Crossover Classic.
