Bulldogs Unanimous Pick To Finish Second In SoCon

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – With the start of the 2021-22 season upon us, the two-time defending Southern Conference regular season champion Samford University Women’s Basketball team has been picked to finish second in the annual SoCon Preseason Coaches & Media Poll released on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Junior guard Andrea Cournoyer, the reigning SoCon Player of the Year, was picked to repeat the honor.

“We’ve been working hard preparing for our season-opener at Iowa and we’re excited to be so close to the start of the campaign,” Samford head coach Carley Kuhns said. “The SoCon will be a tough race again this year and we look forward defending our title.”

The Bulldogs, who finished 2020-21 as the regular season champions with an 11-2 record, received three first place votes in the SoCon Preseason Coaches’ Poll and six in the league’s Media Poll while ranking second in both polls. Mercer was a unanimous pick to finish first.

Samford also placed three Bulldogs on the Preseason All-SoCon Team, as guard Andrea Cournoyer and forwards Natalie Armstrong and Annie Ramil look to repeat last year’s postseason accolades.

“Our squad has a strong returning nucleus led by Andrea, Annie and Natalie,” Kuhns added. “I’m pleased our league coaches recognize their talent and effort.”

Cournoyer, a 5-4 junior from Merryville, La., returns to lead the Bulldogs after pacing the SoCon in scoring at 18.4 points per game. Armstrong, a 6-2 senior from Norcross, Ga., averaged 12.7 points and 6.3 rebounds while Ramil, a 6-0 junior from Binghampton, N.Y., turned in 11.0 points and 8.3 boards per game.

The Bulldogs open the season on Thursday, Nov. 11 at the University of Iowa. Tipoff is set for 6 PM at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. The game will be broadcast on the Big 10 Network.
