Alabama State takes 2-0 win against Southern in final home match

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State defeated Southern 2-0 to close out the home stretch of their season in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action at the ASU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Hornets took home the victory to win their fifth conference match as they honored seniors Mary Martin Mooneyham (Montgomery, Ala.) and Janae Brown (Orlando, Fla.), along with McKenna Wiscombe (Orem, Utah) who was honored in the spring.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After over 31 minutes of scoreless play, Camila Jiminez (Weston, Fla.) put the Hornets up 1-0 with a goal at the 31:51 mark, her sixth of the season.
  • The Hornets maintained the lead throughout halftime, giving up just four shots in the half.
  • Katherine Nedved (Chandler, Ariz.) scored her first career goal in the 83rd minute, assisted by Sunny Bowlin-Stacy (Anchorage, Alaska) to put Alabama State up 2-0 for the final score.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Alabama State head coach Jodie Smith earned his 100t win at Alabama State with the victory on Sunday – he currently holds a 100-178-11 record, including three conference championships at the helm of the program since his hiring in 2006.
  • Alabama State outshot Southern 12-6 in the match, with seven shots on goal for the Hornets and just three for the Jaguars.
  • The match included 11 total fouls – five from Alabama State and six from Southern – along with four corner kicks with two on each side.
  • Jimenez recorded five shots on the afternoon – with three on goal – while seven other Hornets recorded a shot during the match.
  • Sheila Sanchez (Castellon, Spain) recorded three saves and recorded her third shutout of the year in the win.
