UAH Wins Third Straight Gulf South Conference Championship

CLINTON, Miss. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men’s cross country team won the 2021 Gulf South Conference Men’s Cross Country Championships for the program’s third consecutive conference title on Saturday morning at the Choctaw Trails.
This was the program’s seventh overall GSC Championship, and the second time the team has accomplished a conference championship in three consecutive seasons as UAH previously won the title from 2011-13.
Jay Day led the way for UAH in its championship performance as he garnered his fifth career First Team All-GSC award with a third-place time of 24:25.95 to pace a total of six Chargers in the top 20 of the field on Saturday.
Day was joined by four more Chargers in the top 10 of the field, including Allan Anderson in seventh at 24:30.25, Jacob Bishop in eighth at 24:34.91, Harold Lacroix in ninth at 24:44.43 and Sam Wilhelm in 10th at 24:46.15. Each of these runners were named First Team All-GSC for their top-10 performance on Saturday.
Wilhelm was named GSC Freshman of the Year as the highest placing freshman on Saturday. He is the fifth GSC Freshman of the Year in program history.
Alex Herbst notched a top 20 time of 24:53.78 for 16th-place overall as he earned Second Team All-GSC to give the Chargers six all-conference honorees in 2021.
Also placing for the Chargers at the 2021 GSC Championships included Caleb Boys (22nd, 25:07.91), Will Thompson (25th, 25:21.28), Jack Elliott (27th, 25:27.15) and Gabe Henneberger (33rd, 25:57.44).
Head coach David Cain – in his 22nd year at the helm of the program – garnered his eighth GSC Coach of the Year award. He is now tied for first all-time in conference history with eight GSC Coach of the Year awards.
The Chargers look ahead to the 2021 NCAA South Region Championships on Nov. 6 in St. Leo, Florida.
