UAB Downs UTEP In Five Thrilling Sets

EL PASO- The UAB volleyball team took down UTEP tonight in five thrilling matches.

Fernanda Maida had 23 kills, and Alex Kells had 15. Tatijana Fucka had 4 blocks.

The first set saw UAB take a commanding lead to go up 20-7, before a furious UTEP rally saw the match get to 24-19, but an Erin Powers service ace clinched the set for the Blazers.

The second set was even closer than the second, with the two squads going back forth with points and kills, with the set going into extra time tied 24-24, until UAB finally came out on top 26-24.

The third set saw the Miners fight hard to get back in the game, and despite the match being tied at 21 late, UTEP came out on top thanks to four unanswered points.

The fourth set matched the back-and-forth tone of the match, with each team taking and losing the lead several times, with a hard fought match that went down to the wire, with the Miners eventually coming out on top 26-24.

The fifth set saw the Blazers finally come out on with the win, with a clutch defensive performance pacing UAB to a decisive victory to win the set 15-11, and the match 3-2.

“We knew tonight’s match was going to be a battle, and we fought hard for every point.” Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. “We have been working hard on our defensive effort all week, and it is great that we were able to see the benefits in the match. Tonight was a total team win with major contributions from all our attackers. Sam Gomez had some big time swings at huge moments for us. We’ve been talking with our middles about attacking efficiently, and Kiana Mack was great in both serve receive and transition offense. The tough part about this schedule is the quick turn around, and we look to carry that effort and momentum into the match tomorrow.”

UAB faces UTEP again tomorrow at 1 PM CT.
