Alabama A&M Women’s Basketball Earns Pair on All-SWAC Preseason Teams; Lewis on First-Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In advance of the 2021-22 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) season, Alabama A&M women’s basketball has notched a pair of selections on the league’s preseason teams as announced by the league on Thursday, October 21.
Senior forward Dariauna Lewis (Omaha, Neb.) picked up First-Team honors while graduate guard Deshawna Harper (Indianapolis, Ind.) collected Second-Team recognition.
Lewis started all 17 games while delivering averages of 17.8 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, and nearly a steal and assist per game. On the season she shot .604 from the field (122-of-202).
In 2020-21 she was named a SWAC Player of the Week four times, the league’s Impact Player once and a BOXTOROW National Player of the Week one time. More impressively, she became the first Bulldog in 29-years to earn College Sports Information Directors Association of America (CoSIDA) All-District and All-America honors and was also the only basketball player from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), men’s or women’s, to achieve that.
On the year she recorded 14 double-doubles, including nine straight at one point, to go with 12 games of at least 12 rebounds and a 24-point, 19 board effort at Southern (2/24). Lewis has also added a pair of 17 board games, one that went with a season-high 25 points at Alcorn State (2/22) and recorded four games with four blocks. She closed the season with a 21-point, 20-rebound effort against Grambling (3/11) in the SWAC Tournament.
In terms of SWAC statistical rankings she led the league in rebounding and field goal percentage and is second in points and third in blocks per game. She also finished second in the NCAA in rebounds per game in one of the single greatest individual performances in program history.
Harper was a driving force as Alabama A&M has put together a 10-7 overall record and 8-5 mark in SWAC play.
In starting all 17 games she averaged 15.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting .347 from three-point range (43-of-124). A complement to the inside presence of Lewis, Harper recorded 11 games with at least three three-pointers to go with 14 contests in double-figure scoring.
Of those, four hit at least the 20-point mark, including 23 with six assists and five steals against Prairie View A&M (2/27) and 22 points with six threes (6-of-12) against Mississippi Valley State (2/6). Harper also dropped two 20-point games, the first in the season opener vs. No. 11 (Mid-Major) Troy (11/28) and the other against Texas Southern (3/1).
Lewis, Harper and the Bulldogs will tip-off the 2021-22 season on November 9 and 10 with back-to-back games in the State of Ohio. They will open at Dayton before taking on Cincinnati the following day.
