Watson excels in administrative role

Miles men’s basketball coach Fred Watson has been a force for the Golden Bears’ program, leading the team to back-to-back Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles and NCAA Division II South Region postseason tournament appearances during his first two seasons.

But Watson’s leadership has been just as effective away from the court. Miles previously recognized his efforts by adding the Assistant Director of Athletics title to his responsibilities. Now, he will serve as the No. 2 administrator in the Golden Bears athletic department under Director of Athletics Reginald Ruffin.

“Being a basketball coach allows me to have an impact on the young men that come through my program. But serving as an administrator let’s me have an even greater impact on the entire athletic program and this institution,” Watson said. “There is work to do here at Miles and I’m honored that President (Bobbie) Knight and AD Ruffin have entrusted me with helping lead some of those efforts.”

Under Ruffin’s leadership, Watson has cultivated relationships that have led to an increase in giving to the athletic department. His work has led to donors fulfilling the department’s goal of raising $250,000 in the Miles 18/19 Athletic Funding campaign. Those donations have gone towards athletic department operations and facility maintenance and upgrades, including student-athlete player lounges and locker rooms.

“We are grateful to have someone of Coach Watson’s abilities on our athletics staff,” Ruffin said. “In his short time at Miles, he has already played a big role in the growth of our department. Winning the championships has raised the visibility of our program but he has also done some wonderful things to increase the viability of the department for our employees and, most-importantly, our student-athletes.”
