THIS WEEK IN UM FALCON SPORTS

The Fall is officially underway and the Falcons are off to a great start. The Falcon soccer teams both opened their 2021 campaigns on the home turf last week. The men’s team had a win and a tie at Varsity Field, beating Lincoln Memorial in a 3-2 thriller on Wednesday, then battling Florida Southern to a 2-2 draw on Saturday. Meanwhile, the women’s team opened the season at home against Florida Tech and came up short 1-0 after a hard-fought game in some steamy temperature on Sunday.

The UM Volleyball and Cross Country teams both opened their seasons on the road. The Falcon volleyball team won 3-of-4 matches at the Union University Classic in Jackson, Tenn. On Friday, the Falcons swept a pair of matches, beating Lane College and Truman State. Then, after losing their first match of the year to Lindenwood (MO) 3-1, the Falcons rebounded with a convincing 3-0 swept of Florida Tech.

Meanwhile, the UM Cross Country teams were under the lights at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic. The races were run deep into the evening at 9:20 and 10 p.m. Both teams had strong outings with the men’s team finishing 8th out of 20 teams and the women coming in 12-of-22 in races stacked with Division I competition.
