Despite the change of plans and a year’s layoff due to Covid, the Badgers finished with 52 points and an average team time of 18:02 over the 5,000-meter course. Wallace State took home the team title with 31 points and a combined time of 17:30.

After the meet, SHC head coach Craig McVey was pleased with the performance. “Today was a great start,” he said. “We were on the most difficult course I’ve been to since coming to Spring Hill, but a great course and the cooler temperatures helped. We got a lot of mileage out of today. The learning curve for us was invaluable. It was kind of like taking a final exam in the first two weeks of class.”

McVey continued, “For us now, everyone knows exactly what we have to work on individually and as a team. A cool thing was as challenging as today was, the pieces are right in front of us to team run in groups and everyone can sense it. That can be powerful for us. Individually, [women’s runner Mary Elizabeth] Shelton and a great day for us especially for as early as we are in the year as did Will Tate on the men’s side.”

The Badgers will next run at the Falcon Classic hosted by the University of Montevallo (UM) on the UM Cross Country Course in Montevallo, Ala., on Saturday, October 18, at 9 a.m.
