GSC features multiple Falcon’s in weekly performance awards

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Gulf South Conference announced the winners of its weekly awards Tuesday, which included seven Falcons.

Freshman Lauren Higginbotham was named the GSC Player of the Week in softball for her performances during last weeks games.  Higginbotham went 10-for-15 on the week, driving in 13 runs and scoring seven runs. She also stole five bases in a 4-1 week for the Falcons.  The Warrior, AL native currently has a .667 batting average with two doubles, two triples, 13 RBI’s, seven runs, and five stolen bases on the season.

Ryan Curran was tabbed as the GSC Freshman of the Week after going 10-for-14 from the plate over three games against Union, hitting four doubles and scoring three runs.  Curran is hitting at a .714 average so far this season, along with a 1.000 SLG%, and four doubles.

Rylee Horton was the winner of the GSC’s Womens Lacrosse Freshman of the Week for her efforts in the 17-6 win over Oglethorpe this past Saturday.  Horton notched three goals with two caused turnovers, one draw control, and one ground ball.

Mason Shifflett also took the Freshman of the Week award for the GSC East.  Shifflett averaged 11.3 points per game as the Falcons were able to clinch their spot in the postseason. He scored a career-high 22 points in Tuesday’s matchup with West Florida. This marks the second time this season that Shifflett has won this award.

Additionally the conference announced Top Performers of the week for volleyball, to which three Falcons were recognized. 

Amanda Nugent was named one of the GSC’s Top Offensive Players for the week after her dominance on the court propelled the Falcons to victories against West Alabama, Shorter, and West Georgia this week. She had 49 kills (3.5 kills/set) and a .319 attack percentage.

Casey Hendrixson was named one of the Top Defensive Players and Top Freshman for her performances.  Hendrixson led the Falcons defensively by tallying 67 digs (4.79 digs/set) in their three wins this week. She also added nine assists and two service aces.
