Trojans Fall in Straight Sets To South Alabama

TROY, Ala. –  In front of a packed crowd at Trojan arena Tuesday night, Troy fell to South Alabama in three sets (14-25, 17-25, 15-25).
Troy (11-9, 4-5) was led by Tori Hester, who was the lone Trojan to see double-digit kills with 10. Amara Anderson recorded 23 assists, her second-lowest total on the season. The Trojans only managed three blocks in the match compared to 13 by South Alabama. Lacey Jeffcoat shared the game-high in digs with 11. The Trojans finished with a season-low .021 hitting percentage with 24 errors.
South Alabama (15-6, 8-1) was led by Hannah Maddux and Carissa Bradford, who had 10 kills. Kailey Keebie had a match-high 35 assists. As a team, the Jaguars hit .375 on the match, only committing eight errors.
“It was a humbling loss,” head coach Josh Lauer said. “South played clean, and our offense was a super high error, and you can’t win volleyball games like that. But, the thing about a loss like this is that our players are mature, and we never had a problem bouncing back. The players are still hungry to win and get back at practice and get better.”
First Set: After an early back and forth, which saw eight tie scores and six lead changes. The Jaguars were able to string together a six-point run and not look back. Tori Hester tried to rally the Trojans with back-to-back kills, but another six-point run by South Alabama finished off the set 25-14.
Second Set: The Trojans would have their highest hitting percentage of any set in the second, but again it wasn’t enough as South Alabama connected on .394 on all attempts and never allowed Troy to have a firm footing in the set.
Third Set: South Alabama had a lead at every point of the set after three straight attack errors by the Trojans to start. The Trojans didn’t have any blocks in the set as South Alabama was able to record five. Ashley Guenveur came in and gave the Trojans some solid minutes recording two kills. However, the lead was too large for the Trojans to come back from, and South Alabama would take the match.
Up Next: It will be a short week for the Trojans as they hit the road and head west for the weekend. They will square off with the University of Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, October 22nd, and the University of Louisiana on Saturday, October 23rd.
