WACO, Texas – West Alabama football makes its first appearance in the NCAA DII Power Rankings and rises to top-10 in the AFCA Coaches’ Poll in Week 5 after defeating the formerly No. 9 West Georgia in an offensive showdown on Saturday, Oct. 2.
The Tigers are off to their first 5-0 start since 1972, and Head Coach Brett Gilliland hit a 50th career win milestone with the win over the Wolves. UWA is now ranked 9th in the NCAA DII Power Rankings and 10th in the AFCA polls, following the 38-20 victory.
West Florida (No.1) and Valdosta (No.5) are the only other Gulf South Conference competitors appearing on the DII Power Rankings. West Florida also holds the No. 1 spot in the AFCA poll, while Valdosta is a notch higher at No. 4.
The recently defeated West Georgia is the only other GSC team on the AFCA poll, ranked 13th.
West Alabama’s hope to continue to rise in the poll as it travels to Rome, Ga. to take on Shorter University on Saturday, Oct. 9. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. CT/ 1 p.m. ET.
