Weekend Preview
UAB is looking to find some consistency in the win column after splitting two matches this past weekend versus UTSA. Outside hitter Fernanda Maida is currently 3rd in the nation in points per set (5.66) Alex Kells is averaging 3.49 kills per set, and Lidya Canturk is averaging 6.05 assists per set. This weekend’s matches will feature a battle of two of the top hitters in all of college volleyball. “We look forward to hosting two matches this weekend against North Texas and are excited to be back in Bartow.” Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. “North Texas is coming off a 4 match CUSA win streak with Rhett Robinson currently sitting at #2 in the NCAA in Kills/Set and #2 in NCAA in Points/Set. Fernanda Maida is currently #5 in the NCAA in Kills/Set and #3 in the NCAA in Points/Set. It’s not every day you have the chance to see a match up with some of the most prolific attackers in the NCAA, so there should be some exciting volleyball. We anticipate two hard fought matches between the #2 and #3 teams in the West.” The Blazers will look to keep up with North Texas with their own offensive firepower, as well as the defensive efforts of Erin Powers, who is averaging 4.02 digs per set.
Scouting the Mean Green
As Coach Freeburg mentioned, North Texas is led by their Senior Outside Hitter, Rhett Robinson. She is currently ranked just ahead of Fernanda Maida in points per set (5.75). Defensively, the Mean Green are paced by Henrianna Ibarra, who has 265 digs on the year, as well as Sarah Haeussler, who has 85 blocks this season. As a team, North Texas is hitting .245%.
