Fernanda Maida Earns C-USA Offensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAMFernanda Maida has been named C-USA Offensive Player of the week, the league office announced Monday. Maida collected 59 kills in last weekend’s two matches. In Friday’s match, Maida tied the C-USA season high with 32 kills, which was second in UAB history for the most in a single match. In Saturday’s match, Maida scored 27 kills, hit .306, and added 15 digs. Over the two matches played, she recorded three aces, five blocks, and 22 digs. Maida currently ranks fourth in the nation in kills per set (5.18).
“Individual awards, especially in such a team sport like volleyball, are always a reflection of team success. We are thrilled that Fernanda Maida is being recognized by CUSA for her performance against Old Dominion this weekend.” Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. “We knew her kill numbers on Friday night were impressive with 32, and then for her to turn around in less than 18 hours put 27 kills on the board hitting .306 is remarkable. She did a great job adapting from match 1 to match 2 in navigating Old Dominion’s physical block. That, combined with our improved passing as a group, helped lead to a win on day 2.”
This is the second time this season Fernanda Maida has been named C-USA player of the week. She is currently third in the nation in points per set, (5.75) sixth in the nation in attacks per set, (13.04) and fourth in the nation in kills per set (5.18). On the year, Maida has 264 kills, 20 service aces, and 114 digs.
UAB plays two matches against UTSA in San Antonio, Texas this weekend.
